Card schemes

BC Card (비씨카드)Korea's only true domestic card scheme and processor. It issues and processes cards for about 10 banks that have no card subsidiary of their own, and it is the country's largest acquirer. Key point: in Korea, domestic transactions do not run over Visa or Mastercard rails, even when the card carries their logo.BC Card Co. (Ltd. (KT Group)) · since 198242.6% share of merchant acquiring in 2023 (industry sources; not cross-checked against an FSS report)
Korean card issuers' domestic network (Shinhan, Samsung, KB Kookmin, Hyundai, Lotte, Hana, Woori, NH Nonghyup, BC)Korea is the world’s most card-intensive market, with several cards per adult and usage boosted by a tax deduction on card spending. Regulation caps merchant fees, which shapes the economics of the entire sector.nine licensed card companies (여신전문금융회사) · since 1980About 130 million credit cards issued in 2023 (Statista); Shinhan Card had 24.8% of purchase volume, and Lotte Card had 18.7 million cards and a 14.3% share in 2023 (industry sources, not cross-checked)

Instant payments

KFTC · Interbank Funds Transfer Network (타행환/전자금융공동망)Korea’s near-instant interbank transfer rail: the payee is credited immediately, while interbank positions are netted multilaterally and settled the next day on BOK-Wire+. Korea has had retail instant payments since the 1980s and 1990s, a fact routinely missing from international comparisons.Korea Financial Telecommunications & Clearings Institute (금융결제원, KFTC) (nonprofit owned by its member banks) · since 1989
KFTC Interbank Network / Open BankingKorea has had near-instant interbank transfers through KFTC since the 1980s, complemented by mandatory Open Banking in 2019, which opened payment initiation to fintechs. This head start is often overlooked in comparisons.Korea Financial Telecommunications and Clearings Institute (KFTC) · since 1988
Korean Open Banking (오픈뱅킹)A one-stop API gateway for balance inquiries and, above all, PAYMENT INITIATION on accounts at every bank, open to fintechs (Toss, Kakao Pay, Naver Pay) from day one at very low regulated access fees. That explains why Korean wallets are so strong against the banks, whereas PSD2 in Europe has not had the same effect.KFTC (driven by the Financial Services Commission (FSC)) · since 2019

Clearing and settlement

KFTC · Check Clearing System (어음교환시스템)Clearing of checks and bills of exchange, largely digitized through image truncation. It survives mainly for trade bills between businesses.KFTC · since 1910
KFTC · CMS Network (자금관리서비스망)Cash Management Service: bulk direct debits and credit transfers for businesses, with electronic mandates. It is Korea’s rail for subscriptions and recurring dues.KFTC · since 1996
KFTC · Giro System (지로시스템)System for bill payments and bulk direct debits (utilities, taxes, insurance premiums). Korea’s counterpart to the European giro systems.KFTC · since 1977
전자어음Korea’s dematerialized commercial bill: issued, endorsed, and presented for payment electronically, managed by the central securities depository. It is the Korean counterpart to Japan’s Densai Net and the electronic counterpart to the KFTC’s paper-only bill clearing system (어음교환시스템). A practitioner who finds only the latter in an inventory will wrongly conclude that Korea still relies on paper bills.한국예탁결제원 (Korea Securities Depository) (designated manager of Korea’s electronic bill system)

Wallets

Kakao Pay (카카오페이)Wallet built into KakaoTalk, the messaging app nearly every Korean uses: online payments, offline QR, transfers, insurance, and investing. Key regulatory red flag: in April 2025, the Financial Supervisory Service fined it KRW 15 billion for transferring data on 40 million users to Alipay Singapore Holdings without consent.Kakao Pay Corp. ((Kakao group), publicly listed since November 2021) · since 201410 million users about 20 months after launch (Kakao); no cross-checked 2025 figure for users or volume
Naver Pay (네이버페이)Wallet of Korea’s leading web portal and leading marketplace (Smart Store). Its strength is e-commerce checkout and the points program, more than in-store payments.Naver Financial Corp. (Naver group) · since 2015At launch: 14 banks, 3 card companies, and 53,000 affiliated merchants (Naver, 2015); no recent cross-checked figure
Samsung PayThe only wallet to bring MST (Magnetic Secure Transmission) to the mass market. MST emulated the magnetic stripe, so it worked on non-NFC terminals, which was decisive in Korea, where most terminals were stripe-based. MST has since been dropped from new models, which pushed Korea toward NFC/EMV.Samsung Electronics · since 2015
Toss / Toss Pay (토스)Toss started with free P2P transfers and grew into a full financial super app: Toss Bank (online bank), Toss Payments (acquiring and payment gateway, from the purchase of LG U+’s PG business), and Toss Securities. It is the world’s best example of a fintech using a low-cost open banking framework to disintermediate banks.Viva Republica Inc. · since 2015More than 20 million users in South Korea in 2021 (Viva Republica); $7.4 billion valuation in the June 2021 funding round; no cross-checked payment volume

Acquiring and processing

Korean VAN networks (Nice Information & Telecom, KIS Information, KICC, Smartro)An intermediation layer unique to Korea, between the merchant terminal and the issuers: VANs (value-added networks) handle authorization and batch submission. An integrator looking to accept payments in Korea goes through a VAN or a PG (payment gateway), never directly to the issuers.licensed private VAN companies · since 1990
KG이니시스 (KG Inicis)One of Korea’s leading payment gateways (PGs): e-commerce payment acceptance, recurring and subscription payments, simplified checkout, terminals, and kiosks. Korean listings often cover the VAN (value-added network) layer but not the PG layer, even though the PG holds the online merchant contract. An integrator that wants to accept payments in Korea signs with a PG, not a VAN.KG Inicis Co., Ltd. (part of the KG group, listed on KOSDAQ under ticker 035600)
NHN KCPKorea’s second major PG, strong in e-commerce, gaming, and food delivery, with its own simplified checkout (KCP PAY). Together with KG Inicis, Toss Payments, and Danal, it forms the Korean market’s actual online acquiring layer, separate from the VANs that handle authorization at the point of sale.NHN KCP (part of the NHN group)

The operator is no longer the one usually cited: the service is now run by 이동의즐거움 under the 이즐 brand.이동의즐거움 주식회사 (Operator named in the service’s legal notice (registration number 129-86-38970). The Cashbee brand has been merged into the shared 이즐 (eZL) identity with Roca Mobility, so any documentation naming Lotte Data Communication as the operator is out of date.)
