Privacy policy. What is collected, by whom, why, and how to opt out.
Paypedia is a reference site with no accounts and no forms. It processes your data for only two reasons: to measure its audience and to fund itself with advertising. This page states exactly what each one stores, under what conditions, and how to opt out, without boilerplate.
Who the data controller is
The data controller is the publisher of Paypedia. The site is hosted on Firebase Hosting (Google Ireland Limited, Gordon House, Barrow Street, Dublin 4, Ireland).
For any question or request about your data: support@paypedia.org
What is stored, and under what conditions
On this page, “in Europe” means the European Economic Area, the UK, and Switzerland: that’s where Google’s consent tool is shown, and where measurement and personalized-ad trackers wait for your consent. Elsewhere, only audience measurement may wait for it: when the site’s own banner is shown (see below).
| Purpose | Recipient | Legal basis | Retention |
|---|---|---|---|
| Audience measurement | Google Analytics 4 (G-L8LWZFY1CG)Cookies: _ga, _ga_L8LWZFY1CG | In Europe, and wherever the site’s own banner is shown, consent (Art. 6(1)(a)); elsewhere, legitimate interest (Art. 6(1)(f)) | Cookies: 13 months; data: 14 months |
| Personalized ads | Google AdSense (ca-pub-9876965921899464) and the partners listed in the consent tool | In Europe, consent (Art. 6(1)(a)); elsewhere, no prior consent, under Google’s responsibility (see below) | 13 months (__gads, __gpi), 6 months (__eoi); partners: durations shown in the consent tool |
| Non-personalized advertising | Google AdSense | Consent to storage (Purpose 1), no profiling | 13 months (__gads, __gpi), 6 months (__eoi) |
| Display preferences | Your browser only | None: nothing is sent | Until you clear it |
In Europe, when it can be shown, your choice is collected by Google’s consent management platform, certified under IAB Europe’s Transparency & Consent Framework (otherwise, see the site’s own banner below). It stores your answer in the FCCDCF cookie for 13 months and also sets FCNEC for 1 year, which Google classifies as an analytics cookie. Google’s ad script, which carries this tool, loads on every content page as soon as it opens, before any choice and everywhere in the world, so Google receives your IP address and the page address, as it does for any file served from its servers.
If you decline personalization but allow information to be stored on your device, ads are still shown, chosen based on the page you’re reading and your approximate location; their cookies are then used to limit how often the same ad repeats, to measure delivery, and to fight fraud. If you also decline storage, no ads are shown and no advertising cookies are set.
Sometimes Google’s consent tool can’t be shown: in Europe, while Google is still reviewing the site; anywhere, when an ad blocker keeps its script from loading, when the tool takes too long to respond, or on a page without ads, such as the error page. In those last cases, the site can’t tell where you’re visiting from, so it asks everyone, in Europe and elsewhere. Paypedia then shows its own banner, limited to audience measurement: it only asks whether Google Analytics may count your visit, with two identical buttons, “Accept” and “Decline,” and nothing is measured until you answer. Your answer is not consent to any advertising: ad signals stay denied. No ads are served on the error page or when the ad script is blocked, nor, in Europe, until Google has collected your choice. The banner goes away as soon as Google’s tool appears; from then on, the answer you give Google is the one that counts, and the one you gave the site’s banner is deleted.
Outside Europe, the consent tool isn’t shown: audience measurement and advertising, including personalized ads, are on from your first visit, without prior consent, except when Google’s tool can’t load: measurement then waits for your answer to the site’s own banner (see above). Measurement relies on Paypedia’s legitimate interest in knowing which pages get read (GDPR Art. 6(1)(f)); ad personalization is done by Google, acting as an independent controller under its own rules. You can opt out of either at any time using the options below.
Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website or other websites. Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visits to this site and/or other sites on the Internet. To opt out:
- Ad personalization by Google (My Ad Center): myadcenter.google.com
- Personalized ads from other vendors, in Europe: youronlinechoices.eu
- Personalized ads from other vendors, in the US: aboutads.info
- Audience measurement (Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on): tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout
- How Google uses data from sites that show its ads: policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites
The IBAN checker and BIN lookup
What the site does not do
- No account, no password, no sign-up form.
- No selling of reader lists: the only data passed to third parties is what hosting, audience measurement, and advertising use, as described on this page.
- No card number or IBAN is ever sent to a server in full. A BIN lookup downloads the slice of the BIN database for the first three digits: the host sees those three digits and nothing more. An IBAN check reveals only the country, as a two-letter code.
- In the European Economic Area, the UK, and Switzerland, no measurement or personalized-ad trackers before you choose.
- No email is ever sent: the site does not collect email addresses.
What your browser stores
These values stay in your browser. They are never sent to Paypedia or to any third party, and clearing the site’s data deletes all of them. None of them can identify you.
| Key | What it does | Duration |
|---|---|---|
paypedia-theme | Light or dark theme. Written before the consent banner, because the page needs the theme to paint its first frame. It measures nothing and never leaves the browser. | until cleared |
paypedia:langue | Chosen display language | until cleared |
paypedia:zone | Geographic region chosen for the data displayed | until cleared |
paypedia-quiz-… | Best quiz score, one record per course | until cleared |
paypedia-course-…-done | Chapters marked as read, one record per course | until cleared |
paypedia-mesure-repli | Your answer to the site’s own analytics banner, shown when Google’s consent tool can’t be: allowed or declined, the date of your answer, and a version number. It exists only if you answered that banner, and it’s deleted as soon as Google’s tool appears. | 6 months, then you’re asked again |
paypedia-mcp-widget | Open or closed state of the floating assistant | until cleared |
Google’s scripts loaded on the site (ads, consent, measurement) may also write to this storage, under their own keys, on the terms described above.
Hosting, logs, and transfers
The site is served by Firebase Hosting through a content delivery network. Like any web server, it keeps technical logs: IP address, page requested, date, and browser. These logs belong to the host, not to Paypedia, which has no access to them and makes no use of them.
Processing handled by Google, including hosting, may involve transfers outside the European Union, under the safeguards Google declares for its own services. Paypedia controls neither how long these logs are kept nor exactly where they are stored, so it does not claim to document them here.
Your rights
You have the rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, objection, and portability over data about you, as well as the right to withdraw your consent at any time: in Europe, and wherever the site’s own banner is shown, withdrawing is as easy as consenting, with the button below; elsewhere, the opt-out links above let you object. Because the site holds no accounts or contact details, exercising these rights with Paypedia in practice covers what is described above. Audience measurement knows you only by the random identifier in its _ga cookie, which doesn’t reveal who you are: to have the data tied to it erased, send us its value, which you can find in your browser settings. For data Google holds in its own right, exercise these rights directly with Google.
You can file a complaint with France’s data protection authority, the Commission nationale de l’informatique et des libertés (CNIL), 3 place de Fontenoy, 75007 Paris, or with the supervisory authority of your country of residence in the European Economic Area.
Changing your mind
In Europe, this button reopens Google’s consent tool, where you can change or withdraw your choice, purpose by purpose and partner by partner. When that tool can’t be shown, in Europe or elsewhere, it reopens the site’s own analytics banner instead: you can accept or decline again there, and declining stops analytics data from being sent right away. Elsewhere, when the tool has loaded with nothing to ask you, it takes you to the opt-out links above.
