Card schemes

DinaCardA national card scheme run directly by Serbia's central bank, a rare setup in Europe. It is often co-badged with an international scheme. Any acceptance setup in Serbia must support DinaCard, or it will turn away a significant share of local cardholders.Narodna banka Srbije (NBS) · since 2003accepted at more than 150,000 POS terminals in Serbia (NBS)

Instant payments

IPS NBSSerbia’s instant payment system, launched in October 2018 and operated by the central bank. Serbia was one of the first non-EU countries in Europe to roll out a full instant rail, and growth has held steady in double digits.Narodna banka Srbije (NBS) · since 201850.7 million payments worth RSD 628.7 billion in H1 2025, up 24.8% in volume and 37.1% in value year over year; Q2 2025: 26.4 million payments, up from 21.1 million in Q2 2024 (NBS)

Clearing and settlement

Kliring NBSMultilateral clearing of low-value dinar payments: transfers up to RSD 300,000, four netting cycles a day (10:30, 12:30, 14:30, and 17:00), with net balances settled in NBS RTGS. The RSD 300,000 threshold is the dividing line for the whole Serbian system: above it, RTGS is mandatory; below it, payments go through deferred kliring or instant IPS.Narodna banka Srbije (operated directly by the National Bank of Serbia, like the RTGS; also classified as an important payment system under Serbian law)

Interoperable QR

IPS pokaži / IPS skenirajSerbia’s national QR standard for merchant payments, running on IPS NBS in two modes (merchant-presented and merchant-scanned). A mature example of central bank-led interoperable QR outside the EU.Narodna banka Srbije (NBS) · since 2020

Cross-border rails

Međunarodni kliring u devizamaEuro clearing between participants in Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro, operated by the National Bank of Serbia. This regional rail is little documented outside the Balkans, yet it bypasses correspondent banks across three neighboring markets. Anyone settling in euros in the region should know it.Narodna banka Srbije (based on bilateral agreements between the National Bank of Serbia and its counterparts in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro)

Other

RTGS NBSReal-time gross settlement for the dinar: every transfer above RSD 300,000 must go through it, from 09:00 to 18:00 on business days. It is the finality layer beneath IPS NBS, retail kliring (clearing), and DinaCard clearing. The payer never sees it, but this is where settlement risk is resolved.Narodna banka Srbije (the National Bank of Serbia operates the system directly, as it does DinaCard and IPS NBS; under Serbia’s payment services law, the RTGS is classified as an important payment system, with protected settlement finality)
