Stripe to tap FedEx shipping data for small-business financing

FedEx and Stripe plan to use FedEx Dataworks shipment, inventory, and fulfillment data to help Stripe Capital assess small businesses for financing, with a first joint product slated for early 2027. FedEx will also add Stripe and more than 50 new payment methods at checkout.

FedEx Dataworks, the data and analytics subsidiary of FedEx Corp., and Stripe announced a long-term strategic collaboration on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, under which FedEx logistics data is meant to help inform financing decisions at Stripe Capital, Stripe’s small-business lending arm. The companies aim to expand access to financing for “tens of thousands” of small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) and plan to launch their first joint solution in early 2027. The deal also runs the other way: FedEx will begin using Stripe as an option to process payments, adding more than 50 new payment methods to its checkouts.

Shipments, inventory, and fulfillment as credit signals

Traditional financing models rely on bank statements and credit scores, the companies argue, “often overlooking operational indicators such as shipment activity, inventory movement, and fulfillment performance.” FedEx Dataworks data is meant “to help inform financing analysis with Stripe Capital,” so that FedEx’s SMB customers can get funding that better reflects how they operate. With these signals, the release says, Stripe “will be better positioned to evaluate, approve, and deploy tailored funding more quickly than traditional lending processes.”

“Together, we can turn the operational momentum of a small business, like shipping a thousand packages a week, into access to growth finance through Stripe Capital,” said John Collison, Stripe’s co-founder and president. “Every day, FedEx helps move more than $2 trillion in global commerce, giving us unique visibility into how businesses operate,” said Vishal Talwar, FedEx’s chief digital and information officer and president of FedEx Dataworks.

Stripe Capital, which offers loans and merchant cash advances, currently bases eligibility on factors such as a business’s payment volume and history on Stripe, according to its product page, and collects repayment as a fixed percentage of sales. Stripe makes business loans through two partner banks, Payments Dive reported. The FedEx collaboration would add signals generated outside Stripe’s payment flows: the shipping activity of FedEx’s small-business customers.

FedEx to add Stripe and more than 50 payment methods at checkout

On the payments side, FedEx will use Stripe to expand payment options for customers globally, adding more than 50 new payment methods to FedEx checkouts to offer “a wider variety of local payment methods.” The release describes Stripe as “an option to process payments” but does not name the providers FedEx uses today.

Markets, data sharing, and payment methods left unspecified

The announcement leaves several points open. A Stripe spokesperson declined to comment beyond the press release, Payments Dive reported. Among the questions the release does not address:

  • Which countries the financing product will cover, and whether borrowers must also process payments with Stripe
  • How shipment data will pass from FedEx to Stripe, and on what terms for the businesses concerned
  • Which payment methods FedEx will add; the company did not specify them, Digital Transactions reported, noting that FedEx already accepts cards and PayPal
  • The financial terms between the two companies

FedEx Dataworks seeks revenue beyond delivery

FedEx created Dataworks in 2020, a company spokesperson told Payments Dive. The unit uses artificial intelligence to analyze companies’ logistics and supply chain operations, drawing on a network that delivers about 18 million packages a day in around 220 countries and territories. Talwar, appointed to lead it in August 2025, told FedEx’s investor day in February that the goal included new high-margin digital revenue streams, FreightWaves reported. Dataworks had already partnered with ServiceNow in October 2025 and with Dun & Bradstreet in February 2026.

Six days after the Parafin deal

The announcement came six days after Stripe agreed, on September 30, to acquire Parafin, which provides credit to small businesses through platforms such as DoorDash, Gusto, Jobber, and Mindbody and has helped more than 60,000 businesses access capital since 2020, according to Stripe. That deal is expected to close in the coming months, subject to customary closing conditions, including any required regulatory clearances. Parafin reaches merchants through the software they already use, while the FedEx collaboration draws on a logistics network.
